Drunk Skunks and Five-Pointed Stars

By the time we get back to Hornswood Manor, all four of us are soaked through to the skin with rainwater. The only dry thing in my possession other than my gun is the envelope of cash Grizwold gave me, which I made him drop into a plastic bag as the lightning started up.

Penelope offered to let us spend the evening at the bar drying off, but with the clouds overhead, I knew we'd only get a brief chance to do the spell under the light of a full moon. So I begged off, threw my wet ass into the mustang with a pang for the leather seats, and punched the gas pedal to get us back in time.

Now I find myself standing in my living room, staring at a baby pen full of goats, wondering why they're all wearing polka dot diapers and eating dried herbs.

"Baird?" There's no one around in sight. Noticing the puddle at my feet, I grab one of the heavy quilts thrown over the back of the sofa, and toss a few at the guys as they shut the door behind them. "Hecuba? Hecky? Hell-ooohhh?"

A little cat voice pipes up from the velvet recliner. "They're out back preparing the acreage." Virginia Conners' voice sounds smug as she observes, "You three boys are very, very wet. Why, I can basically see every muscle in your bodies through those thin clothes of yours. You're sure to catch sick and need to be nursed back to health by attentive paws."

"Uh—Thanks? But no thanks."

Glowing cat eyes turn to me. "Harri darling—surely we can keep them around for a while longer. I'm starting to get used to the view."

"No, we can't keep them. They have to go back to being dead." Sighing, I pull my soaked-through boots off and dig my cold toes into one of the thick shag rugs piled in the living room. "Why are the goats in a pen?"

"It's that or let them run wild."

"And the living room is the only option."

"Don't ask me. I didn't herd them in there with my tail."

I find myself staring at the soon-to-be-sacrificed younglings with alarm. "They're so... cute."

It's hard to think about what has to happen to them in order to end this curse, so I decide to get out of the living room as soon as possible. Heading into the kitchen, I put the kettle on, then rummage through the hall closet for every spare piece of clothing I can find. It's where we keep the old quilts and random sweaters people have left behind in Chez Hornswood over the years, including a few ex-boyfriends and male acquaintances. I manage to assemble enough to make spare outfits for the guys by the time the kettle starts to whistle.

"Here." Throwing the pile of clothing onto the sofa, I gesture to it vaguely. "Some stuff for all of you to change into. And before you complain, Amir, no of course none of it is designer—but it won't matter very much soon.
